Tamil Nadu election: Stalin faces defeat

At the end of eight hours of counting of votes in Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is leading in 107 out 234 constituencies across the State, as of 4.00 p.m. on Monday (May 4, 2026).


The DMK+ is leading in 68 seats, whereas the AIADMK-led alliance is leading in 51 seats, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).


The results have been declared in the Gudalur constituency in the Nilgiris, with the DMK’s Dhravidamani becoming the MLA for the third time. The DMK’s M. Raju has been declared the winner from the Coonoor constituency, while A. Sudhakar of the party is the winner in the Valparai (SC) segment. In Melur, Congress candidate Viswanathan has won, and CPI’s T. Ramachandran has emerged victorious in the Thally constituency.


Mr. Vijay was leading in both Perambur and Tiruchi East, the two seats he contested. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami maintained a comfortable lead in Edappadi. Meanwhile, DMK president M.K. Stalin trailed in Kolathur, a seat he has represented since 2011, behind TVK candidate V.S. Babu, a former DMK legislator.
