Hambantota Port hits all-time monthly high

The Hambantota International Port (HIP) achieved its highest-ever monthly throughput for both Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) cargo and containers in June, managing 90,219 vehicles and 80,325 TEUs.

This growth was driven by shifting regional trade patterns that emerged earlier in the year, the statement issued in this regard informed.

In response to global shipping disruptions caused by instability in the Strait of Hormuz, HIP proactively doubled its RoRo yard capacity and expanded its container yard space by 30%.

Furthermore, HIP has allocated $108 million for modern container handling machinery to boost its yearly container terminal capacity to 2 million TEUs.

HIPG CEO Wilson Qu highlighted that the port began preparing for supply chain issues as regional tensions escalated, allowing them to smoothly manage the surplus volume and guarantee uninterrupted service.

The port's upward trajectory follows massive growth in 2025, during which total cargo volume surged by 175% to 8.24 million metric tonnes, and container throughput jumped to 428,036 TEUs from just 53,169 TEUs in 2024.

Additionally, HIP hit a separate milestone in April by recording its highest single-vessel container volume, processing 13,260 TEUs from the MSC Marie Leslie.
