Modric marks milestone as Croatia knocks out Panama

A 2nd half strike from substitute Ante Budimir kept Croatia's World Cup knockout hopes alive while eliminating Panama in a 1-0 victory at the Toronto Stadium. The decisive moment arrived 9 minutes after the interval when the forward calmly turned in a low cross from Josip Stanisic at the far post to delight the crowd of 43,036 spectators.

Victory ensured a memorable night for Croatia captain Luka Modric, who celebrated his 200th international cap. The 40-year-old midfielder completed 88% of his passes before standing down in the 81st minute, becoming just the 4th male player in football history to reach this milestone whilst featuring in his 5th World Cup tournament.

The result leaves Group L finely poised after England and Ghana played out a 0-0 draw earlier in the day. Croatia will guarantee a place in the last-32 stage if they defeat Ghana on Saturday in Philadelphia.

Panama created several dangerous opportunities during a goalless 1st half, using their attacking pace to trouble the 2018 tournament runners-up. However, Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic proved unbeatable, pulling off a series of vital saves during a frantic spell just before the 2nd half hydration break to deny an equaliser and secure all 3 points for his team.

While Panama exit the competition after 2 consecutive defeats, they still play for pride against England in their final group match in New Jersey. Meanwhile, Croatia turn their focus toward the decisive weekend clash against Ghana to seal progression.
