Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella stated that the government will launch an investigation into the statements made by Dr. Siddika Senaratne, Director General of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution during the exclusive interview with Hirunews.
The statements made by Dr. Siddhika Senaratne in an interview with the Hiru news team on Coconut Oil Containing cancerous toxins and other food items has caused a lively debate in the country.
Several parties have also lodged complaints with the CID yesterday regarding her statements.
Director General of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution Dr. Siddhika Senaratne told the Hiru news team that the food items with harmful cancerous toxins could not be disclosed since the local producer companies would collapse.
Her statement as the head of a premier State Institution was strongly criticized and opposed by the society.
The Government Medical Officers' Association also strongly criticized the role of the Director General of the Standards Institution.
Based on her statements, the Buddhist Information Center, Lakmawata Voice and Janabala Pavura lodged complaints with the CID.
The complaints have pointed out that the officials of the SLSI by their actions in protecting the food manufacturing companies that have produced harmful food, have contributed to these cancerous foods being consumed by the general public.
They further point out that the benefit of the companies and their success have been placed over the protection of the lives of people and disclosing matters relevant to the public regarding harmful products.
The public point out that these statements have also devalued the trust placed in the institution as a premier standard institution in the country.
