The narrative of a "76-year curse" is a complete fabrication intended to mislead the public, according to Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe, Executive Member of the "Dinana Dakuna" collective.
Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo yesterday (04), he stated that citizens are now beginning to realise the falsehood of this claim.
Warnasinghe emphasized that the 78th National Independence Day should be celebrated with pride, honouring the visionary leaders of 1948 who ensured a unified Sri Lanka.
He argued that the country achieved significant milestones over the past decades and criticized those attempting to undermine the value of independence or discourage national celebrations.
Directing criticism toward the current administration, Warnasinghe noted that despite promises to create a country people want to live in, approximately 310,000 skilled professionals left the island in the last year alone.
He pointed out that while the government promised to stop the "brain drain," people continue to migrate in search of better lives, with the highest foreign remittances still coming from those working in the UAE.
Furthermore, he raised concerns over the proposed closure of 1,505 schools under the guise of education reforms.
He insisted that such decisions must not be left to District Coordinating Committees and required thorough discussion with relevant stakeholders to protect the free education system.
Media spokesperson Thushara Weeraratne and leadership committee member Nadeesha de Silva also participated in the briefing.
