Government must borrow to run the country says minister

Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage stated that government borrowing is not a problem, noting that any government needs to take loans to run the country and that the current administration had also acknowledged this even before coming into power.

He said that taking loans is a normal part of governance and added that the Malimawa government had already indicated prior to forming government that it would also have to borrow funds during its term.

“Taking loans is not an issue. Even before we came to power, we said that we would also take loans when we arrived,” the minister said, expressing his views.

Meanwhile, Minister Gamage rejected opposition claims of political victimisation, stating that if the government intended to take revenge, it would have been done immediately after coming to power.

He further said that what is currently taking place is a formal judicial process that has been ongoing for about one and a half years, adding that any imprisonment occurs through due legal procedures and not due to political victimisation, as alleged by the opposition.
