Switzerland end Colombia’s run in penalty shootout thriller

Switzerland reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954, defeating Colombia 4-3 on penalties following a scoreless 120 minutes at BC Place in Vancouver. Gregor Kobel emerged as the hero for the Swiss side, producing a critical save against Cucho Hernandez to settle the shootout.

The match remained a tight tactical affair, with both teams struggling to find the net during regulation time. Jhon Lucumi came closest for Colombia, hitting the crossbar with a header, while Jaminton Campaz forced an unorthodox save from the Swiss goalkeeper during extra time. Colombia suffered a major setback late in the extra period when Campaz missed an open opportunity following a defensive error by Granit Xhaka, a mistake that ultimately doomed the South American side to shootout heartbreak.

In the ensuing penalties, Swiss composure proved superior. Despite Manuel Akanji missing his spot-kick, successful conversions from Granit Xhaka, Zeki Amdouni, Cedric Itten, and Ruben Vargas secured the win. Colombia’s Davinson Sanchez also rattled the woodwork, confirming their exit after conceding only 1 goal throughout the entire tournament.

The victory sets up a high-stakes quarter-final clash against reigning champions Argentina at Kansas City Stadium on 12 July. The Swiss team triumphed despite the absence of breakthrough star Johan Manzambi due to injury, while Ruben Vargas provided a vital contribution from the bench to seal the result. Switzerland now aims to stop Lionel Messi and the Argentine pursuit of consecutive world titles in what promises to be a defining moment for this squad. Colombia, meanwhile, departs the tournament rueing a lack of clinical finishing, finishing their campaign with 5 goals from 94 attempts.
