A major research project aimed at reforming Sri Lanka's constitution officially launched on January 03 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo.
Professor Deepika Udagama delivered the keynote address, emphasising that the program must operate with clear objectives and a well-defined roadmap from its inception to ensure success.
The initiative, facilitated by the "One Text" (OTI) organisation, brings together a diverse group of experts to foster national consensus on policy among political parties. Prominent legal and political figures contributed to the initial discussions:
- Udaya Gammanpila addressed state sovereignty.
- Dr. K. Guruparan spoke on equality and minority rights.
- Nizam Kariyappar discussed pluralism and community representation.
- Dr. Jayampathy Wickramaratne focused on checks and balances.
- Dr. Ramesh Ramaswamy provided a comparative analysis of democratic transformation.
A dedicated committee of constitutional scholars already commenced a detailed study of potential reforms. Following the main presentations, journalist Shan Wijethunga moderated a panel discussion featuring journalist Malinda Seneviratne, Lecturer Dhamma Dissanayake, and lawyers Sudarshana Gunawardana and K.W. Janaranjana.
This project seeks to introduce a qualitative shift in the country's governance structure through inclusive dialogue.
