A father, mother, and their young daughter sustained critical injuries following a sudden fire inside a bedroom of their home in the Mahagodayaya area of Namandiya, along the Buttala-Monaragala road.
Buttala Police reported that the unfortunate incident occurred last night.
The victims were identified as 29-year-old J.M. Diluksha Madushanka, 26-year-old K.D. Suraji Sakunthala and their three-year-old daughter, J.M. Onalya.
According to police investigations, the fire broke out while the three were asleep, spreading rapidly and destroying numerous household items.
Neighbours acted quickly to admit the injured family to the Monaragala District General Hospital.
Due to the extreme severity of her condition, the three-year-old daughter was subsequently transferred to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle for specialised treatment.
A hospital spokesperson noted that the mother is currently receiving care in the Intensive Care Unit at Monaragala.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and formal investigations are underway.
