The Maligakanda Magistrate's Court today ordered that five suspects arrested in connection with the murder of a youth from Bloemendhal Road, Colombo, be remanded until the 14th of next month. Current investigations suggest the killing stemmed from a violent dispute between two rival underworld factions.
Police have identified organized criminals and drug traffickers Palani Remotion and Kotahena Aravin, both believed to be operating from overseas, as the individuals who allegedly orchestrated the hit. The victim's body was originally discovered on April 23 along the banks of the Kelani River on Ferguson Road in Mattakkuliya.
The investigation revealed that the youth was abducted near the Mahawatta Clock Tower while returning home from work. Suspects in a rented car forced him into the vehicle and drove toward Mattakkuliya. CCTV footage later captured the car idling for approximately ten minutes near the site where the body was found, leading police to believe the murder was carried out inside the vehicle during that window.
The motive for the killing appears to be a retaliatory act. While the victim's brother and mother are currently in remand for drug and firearm offenses respectively, the suspects confessed that the murder was revenge for an assault committed by the victim's brother during a clash inside the prison. The perpetrators further admitted to accepting a contract for the killing valued at approximately Rs. 150,000 in cash along with a quantity of drugs.
Following the arrests made by the Police Special Task Force, the Modara Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau conducted further inquiries under the guidance of SSP Eric Perera. The rented car used in the abduction has been seized as evidence. After being presented to a Judicial Medical Officer, the suspects were produced before the Maligakanda Court for the remanding order.
