Three suspects were arrested by Horana Headquarters Police over allegations of illegal gem mining in the Kalu Ganga using modern machinery.
Equipment valued at approximately Rs.3 million was also seized.
Police stated that the arrests occurred in the Damminna area of Wagawatta, Kobawakawatta in Horana, where the individuals were operating unauthorised mechanised mines.
The seizure of the suspects and the machinery took place around 1:00 AM today.
The raid was executed based on information received by the Panadura Division Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) regarding nighttime illegal mining in the middle of the river.
The suspects, aged between 35 and 54, are residents of Boralugoda, Manana, and Nivitigala.
Investigations revealed that the group had been evading the police for some time, having previously escaped with their machinery during earlier raids.
