Heatwave shatters temperature records across western Europe

A punishing heatwave across western Europe leaves tens of millions of people grappling with melting infrastructure as temperatures smash unprecedented records in France, the United Kingdom, and Spain. France experienced its hottest day ever since records began in 1947, the UK saw record June heat, and Spain recorded its highest daily average since 1950.

Europe is warming twice as fast as the global average, according to climate scientists, predictably triggering intense summer heatwaves, rampant wildfires, and immense pressure on water supplies.

The national temperature indicator in France reached 30C on Wednesday, placing over half the country under a red heat alert and knocking out power for thousands of homes. Extreme conditions forced iconic landmarks like the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower to close early because the historic buildings simply cannot handle the climate shift. Tragic incidents occurred as at least 40 people drowned in heatwave-related water incidents, whilst emergency teams deployed 150 firefighters to combat a major forest fire in the Maine-et-Loire region.

France is in the process of discovering it turned into a hot country, according to Labour Minister Jean-Pierre Farandou, who warned that society needs to adapt quickly.

The UK recorded its hottest June day at 36.1C in Gosport, with forecasters predicting subsequent highs of 38C. Spain faced scorching daily averages above 28C, triggering red alerts in northern areas where temperatures might climb to 42C. Italy issued 16 red alerts, while Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands brace for weekend peaks up to 39C alongside rising drought fears, water restrictions, and sudden barbecue bans. Some relief might arrive by Friday, but the continent remains thoroughly baked for now.
