The Police Media Division today (October 10) issued a statement claiming that former Member of Parliament and leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF), Wimal Weerawansa, failed to provide any corroborating evidence for the claims he made at a media briefing regarding the Seenimodara drug operation.
Weerawansa appeared before the Tangalle Divisional Crime Investigation Office yesterday (9 October) to give a statement following disclosures he made to the media about the suspect known as Weerasinhage Sanath, alias Beliatte Sanā or Puwakdandawe Sana who was arrested on October 2, 2025.
The police statement outlined the following key responses provided by Weerawansa regarding his public statements on the drug suspect:
- He has never met Sana and has never recognised him as an active member of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).
- His statement that drugs were being brought in and drug raids were being conducted with "state patronage" was made based on the prevailing general situation and not specifically related to this incident.
- His claim that Sana was the owner of the boat that transported the drugs was based on information revealed by the media during those days.
- His information was that the President had visited a hotel in the area during the last Local Government Election, not that the President had visited and dined at Sana’s residence.
- He believed the delay in arresting Sana was due to his conviction that such delays were possible with state patronage.
The Police statement concluded by asserting that "Accordingly, the former Member of Parliament Wimal Weerawansa did not present any evidence to confirm the facts related to the statements he made at the media briefing on October 2, 2025."
The police further stated that legal action will be pursued by reporting the matter to the court, as the matter involves making a statement containing information or a fact that is known or believed to be false.
The Tangalle Divisional Crime Investigation Office is conducting further investigations into the matter.
