The government is planning to launch a boat and ferry service between Matara and Akuressa along the Nilwala River, marking the first service of its kind in Sri Lanka.
Minister of Industry and Enterprise Development Sunil Handunnetti stated that the new boat service is intended for the transportation of goods, services, and passengers.
The Minister added that several steps have already been initiated for this project with the support of the Sri Lanka Navy and the Minister of Disaster Management.
The first jetty for the new boat service is planned to be established near the Matara Army Camp.
The terminus in Akuressa will be located near a school playground.
The Minister also suggested the need for at least one intermediate stop along the route.
Following this initial phase, the Minister expressed hope to introduce a tourist boat service that could transport passengers along the river from Matara to the Sinharaja Rainforest.
Furthermore, the government is looking to redevelop inland boat services in other areas of the country, including Colombo.
