IMF pledges continued support for Sri Lanka

Ongoing assistance for Sri Lanka’s economic stabilisation remains a priority for the International Monetary Fund, as confirmed by Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. During a meeting with Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya at the 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the IMF chief recognised the nation's progress despite recent challenges.

The discussion highlighted the country's recovery efforts following the severe impact of Cyclone Ditwah. Georgieva expressed her commitment to the nation’s financial stability through a social media post, noting the significant resilience displayed by the Sri Lankan people. The meeting also included the Labour Minister and Finance Deputy Minister Dr Anil Jayantha Fernando.

In addition to the IMF dialogue, Prime Minister Amarasuriya met with Asian Development Bank President Masato Kanda to discuss the country's current reform agenda and broader economic status. The Prime Minister arrived in Switzerland on Monday as part of a delegation attending the 56th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum, which centres on the theme "A Spirit of Dialogue." This global summit hosts over 3,000 leaders, and the Prime Minister's itinerary includes further bilateral talks with various international heads of state and institutional leaders.
