A request to relax bail conditions for Shadhika Lakshani, the wife of alleged drug trafficker "Backhoe Saman," met rejection by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today. The defense lawyer sought to amend the requirement for her to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) every Sunday, citing the needs of her young child.
The CID informed the court that the suspect possessed gold jewelry worth 8.4 million rupees at the time of her arrest under the Money Laundering Act. Reporting through a further B-report, officers stated that investigations continue regarding over 8 million rupees held in four accounts belonging to her.
Investigations further revealed that 13 bank accounts belonging to her associates currently face suspension. Evidence suggests her involvement in drug trafficking, with large sums of money circulating through the bank accounts of her father and sister during 2024 and 2025 while they lived abroad.
Shadhika Lakshani, currently out on bail, appeared in court for the proceedings. The magistrate ordered the case to be recalled on May 07 for further reports.
