Officers of the Maskeliya Police raided a clandestine illicit liquor distillery operated near a stream within the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, located above the Strathspey Estate.
The raid, which took place last night (21), resulted in the arrest of one suspect and the seizure of various distilling equipment.
Acting on a tip-off received by the Maskeliya Police, a team of officers entered the forest reserve and remained in hiding for a day and a half to carry out the operation.
During the raid, police took into custody 210 litres of goda (fermented wash), 1,500 millilitres of distilled spirits, and several tools used in the brewing process, including copper coils.
The arrested suspect has been identified as a 69-year-old resident of the same estate.
Following the arrest, the individual was released on police bail.
The Officer-in-Charge of the Maskeliya Police stated that legal action will be initiated against the suspect in the Hatton Magistrate's Court.
