A 56-year-old resident of Nanu Oya was taken into custody yesterday for allegedly showing obscene photographs to a group of female students on multiple occasions. Nanu Oya Police reported that the arrest followed complaints made by students aged between 11 and 14 who attend several schools in the area.
Law enforcement officials noted that an ongoing awareness program regarding child abuse and statutory crimes for school children and estate workers in Nanu Oya has encouraged victims to come forward with such complaints. Following the reports, six students were referred to the Judicial Medical Officer at the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital for medical examination and reports.
The suspect is scheduled for production before the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate's Court. Investigations continue under the direction of Chief Inspector Janaka Bandara, Officer-in-Charge of the Nanu Oya Police, along with Sergeant Sanjeevani of the Women’s Bureau and other officers.
