Report issued on Labradorite discovery in Galaha

The National Gem and Jewellery Authority released an official report on January 21, 2026, regarding a rock specimen discovered in the Galaha area of Kandy. The document provides a detailed mineralogical analysis of the find to clarify its composition and economic significance.

mineral composition and characteristics
Expert analysis reveals that the specimen consists of a host rock containing embedded fragments of Labradorite, which is a variety of the Feldspar mineral group. This mineral is specifically recognised for several key traits:

Optical Phenomena: It exhibits a unique iridescent effect known as labradorescence, which typically manifests as distinct blue flashes when exposed to light.

Classification: Labradorite is categorised scientifically as a semi-precious gemstone.

commercial valuation
Despite its striking visual appearance, the authority notes that the find holds limited economic potential. Because Labradorite is classified as semi-precious, it does not carry a high commercial or market value compared to more precious gem varieties.

The report was finalised and signed by Deershika Ranatunga, the acting Director (Valuer/Gemologist) of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority.
